A wedding cake is one of the most important parts of the wedding function, especially in western countries. In some parts of England, the wedding cake is served at the wedding breakfast, note that the ‘wedding breakfast’ does not mean the meal will be held in the morning hours but at a time following the ceremony on the very same day. In modern Western culture, the cake is usually on display and served to guests who are present at the reception.
Traditionally, the wedding cakes were made to bring about good luck to all guests and the couples. However, nowadays they are more of a centrepiece to the wedding and are not always even served to the guests present at the ceremony. Some cakes are built with only a single edible tier for the bride and groom to share, while others are built in various layers.
Historical Accounts of Wedding Cakes
The contemporary wedding cake has grown out of the several different ethnic traditions. One of the first traditions began in the Ancient Rome region where the bread was broken over the bride’s head in order to bring good fortune to the married couple. In the Medieval England, cakes were stacked as high as possible for the bride and groom to kiss over. A successful kiss meant that they were guaranteed a happy, healthy and prosperous life together.

Types of Wedding Cakes
There are different types of wedding cakes, such as the traditional wedding cakes, the wedding cakes based on flavour, smaller cakes or the individual cakes, the yummy frosted cakes, and the everlasting tasty cupcakes.
Traditional wedding cakes are usually white, including the decoration and icing varieties such as buttercream, cashews, almond etc. Wedding cakes that are based on flavour include chocolate, vanilla, or strawberry. Smaller cakes or individual cakes can be more significantly efficient in terms of price. The frosted cakes are the most popular category simply due to the very reason that it involves loads of cream.
In the modern day society, the most popular wedding cake is called “Traditional stack cake.” This consists of various layers of tiers– which can even be of different flavors– positioned directly on top of the last”.
The beautiful traditional stack wedding cake is similar to the very tiered cake. Often they are filled with pretty flowers or columns to add the most needed visual impact and height. The separators can include a variety of jewels, shells, and even flowers or can even be completely separated by using the traditional chrome stands.
The white cake is currently amongst the most traditional wedding cake, but the different flavours of filling can be added in-between the various layers. The chocolate, carrot, Italian Rum and Italian Cream are also amongst the popular choices.
Frosting can be that of a classic smooth surface or even combined with drizzle, swirls, or chips.
A fondant is a creative form of frosting style that is rolled out and draped over the various tiers. It’s smooth, firm and delicious sugar icing is often embellished with appliqués, even with gum-paste flowers, or the most desired royal-icing details.
Fondant can even be cut into designs, formed into various shapes, flavoured or even tinted. Poured fondant is used to glaze the various petits fours and other detailed confections. Such fondant gives a glossy finish and touch to a sweet sugary taste.
The royal icing is made with the use of sugar and egg white or even the meringue powder. It hardens to a firm finish that can be easily piped or thinned for the “flood work.” It hardens extremely fast and is ideal for the making of a detailed shape ahead of time. It can also be easily piped directly onto cake tiers and it works beautifully for delicate pieces of work.
In some areas, particularly in the American South, two cakes are presented at the weddings. The more traditional tiered cake is the Bride’s Cake, and a second flavour choice is called the “Groom’s Cake.” This tradition was brought over from England by the early American colonists, who had considered the white-iced “Bride’s Cake” too light for their masculinity. The groom’s cake was usually a dark, liquor-soaked fruitcake, particularly in the Virginia area.
